On my test drive tomorrow of a Hyundai i30 N?

Kinja'd!!!

First time I’m going for a test drive of a new car, ever. Any tips, do’s and don’ts and such?

I’m also bringing a colleague for a second set of eyes and opinion, it helps that he likes cars and is local instead of an expat like I am. People here still tend to screw with expats from time to time.

If you’re not familiar with the i30 N, it’s Hyundais first result of their N Performance development. A hot hatch to compete with the Golf GTI for less money. With 202kW/275BHP from a 2.0L turbocharged 4 cylinder, active suspension, limited slip differential up front and a bunch of other gadgets. It’s become a minor obsession for me in terms of lots of bang for buck for a new car (yes, used can always be cheaper).

Most importantly; drive the competition. Peugeot, Ford, Renault, Honda and maybe even VW. And maybe GT86/BRZ and MX5.

Thing is, the competition doesn’t really attract me all that much.

Golf is boring and €8k more, Fiesta is a tad too small, Focus RS €10k+ more, Civic Type-R is like a Gundam it is so overstyled, Peugeot 308 GTI about €4k more and unappealing interior... Renault doesn’t sell anything hot hatchy here and two-seaters don’t fit my needs.

So while I get that it is good to know what the competition offers, too many reasons why they would never fit the bill while the Hyundai checks all my boxes and has me interested.

I guess I’m asking more for tips on anything I should really check about the car I’m test driving, things to pay particular attention to and such.
